27 (little) Things I Love At 27
Today is my 27th birthday. We have a very exciting, long weekend planned and more than anything I am thrilled to be able to spend more time with the people I love the most. My favorite peeps plus ice skating, dinner date, and a night in Kansas City - I am super pumped to get this birthday train a'rollin'. So on that note I thought I'd share 27 little things that I am currently crushin' on. I hope that you enjoy these little loves!
1. FRESH JUICE! Ah, can I even put into words how much I adore this stuff? Full of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytonutrients, and antioxidants, it is the coolest stuff eva! I just bought a brand spankin' new juicer and I am crazy, head over heals in love. (I promise recipes soon!)
2. Wanderlust Speakeasy lectures. Some brilliant minds out there sharing some very potent and badass info for free online. Is there anything better?
3. Podcasts. Listening to smart, funny people talk about things they are passionate about is addictive. Plus, it makes hours of playing with blocks on the floor more enjoyable for everyone! Current family fav: Roderick On The Line.
4. Herbal tea! Can't get enough, especially a recently acquired little homemade blend by the lovely Rachel of GoodnessMeGoddess (and one of my besties). So lovely and soothing.
5. Playing "cooking" with Ezra in his new kitchen set. He loves bringing me water and preparing some lovely "food" for our bedroom picnics, while yelling "cook" the entire time. It is hilarious and I have decided that is how I want to prepare my food from now on. "COOK!"
6. Hard-core butt kickin' workouts! I'm still maintaining my daily asana practice (and feeling more connected to it than I have in a long time), but I'm making room in my exercise routine for some serious cardio and strength training. Jillian Michael's "30 Day Shred" in all of its shreditude is totally kicking my ass right now and I love it! Well, hello abs! I had forgotten you were in there!
7. The West Wing. Thank you, Netflix for our new date night in entertainment!
8. Ezra's weekly Tunes of Fun music class. With all that singing and dancing sometimes I think I'm having more fun than him!
9. Solo dance parties! Sometimes nothing feels better after a long day than to jump around like an idiot and sing your heart out.
10. Pickled garlic! Ezra's favorite snack and super simple to make, it has become a staple in our house.
11. The Truth About Beauty: Transforming Your Looks and Your Life From the Inside Out by Kat James. Very high on my current love list and a great resource for anyone looking to upgrade their "beauty" and overall health regimen.
12. My skin! With lots of fresh juice, decreasing my dairy intake, a serious increase in exercise, and saying "NO!" to added sugar has transformed my skin. It just feels hydrated and clear in a way that is hasn't in a long time. Outside of vanity it's really invigorating to see the physical changes that taking care of yourself can produce. Yay, clear skin!
13. Shiva Rea's Yoga Trance Dance. If I'm in the mood for a guided at home asana sequence this is my go to right now. Prana flow just makes you feel good and the yoga matrix she uses is super user friendly and fun.
14. Sprouting! Delicious and keepin' in fresh in the winter sprouts have become a lovely addition to our kitchen. (And Ezra just loves watching them grow!)
15. Kellen's homemade hummus. With fresh tahini (from our black sesame seeds) and soaked chickpeas this stuff is seriously amazing (even if it looks like tar)! We usually enjoy this with some raw veggies or if I'm really in for a treat I get to have some hubby-made crackers with nutritional yeast. So good!
16. My nails. I stopped biting them this year and I finally feel like I have a woman's hands. That might sounds strange, but I'm so happy to have kicked that nervous habit and painting my nails is more fun now so I do it more often!
17. "Par-chips" aka parnsip chips. We are currently addicted to these bad boys. (Recipe soon to come!)
18. Gratitude journaling. A lovely and simple way to keep myself humble and in the presence of love.
19. Hibernation. The snow and low temps have kept us indoors most days making the most of books and songs and silliness. As ready as I am for warmer weather and spending our time more connected to nature this time of year has a sweet spot in my heart. There's something rejuvenating about hiding out in your own little world for a few months, giving yourself time to be disconnected. This quietness sometimes causes cases of toddler stir-craziness, but I love it none the less.
20. FAGE Greek Yogurt. Super delicious, no added sugar, and not ridiculously expensive. Yes, yes, and yes.
21. No mo' coffee! After having Ezra I became a caffeine junkie, going from 0-1 cups of coffee every other week to 2+ cups a day. Talk about giving your adrenals a big f you! Running on so little sleep I was desperate for a pick me up, but I am happy to say that I have now kicked the habit. Speaking of sleep...
22. SLEEP! Oh, god, how I love to sleep. Ezra has been consistently sleeping through the night for about six months (outside of the occasional nightmare) and I feel like I have regained my sanity. It's so nice to not be going to bed at 7 PM (only to get a combined 4 hours sleep) anymore! A big hip-hip-hooray for sleeping!
23. Stitch Fix. High quality clothing delivered to your home for a small styling fee, but hey if you decide to purchase any of the items sent to you the fee is applied to your purchase (making the styling completely free)! I feel like this company was made for me. I love high quality boutique clothing, but don't really have the time to shop. I have only received one "fix" so far, but all of the clothes were pretty spot-on with my style and not ridiculously priced. Love it.
24. Beehives. Not the ones with bees in them, the ones you wear on your head. I've become addicted to the 'hive. Once you know what you're doing it's really quick, easy to dress up or down, and you are guaranteed to look adorable. This "Messy Beehive" tutorial from Carrie at WishWishWish is lovely.
25. Knitting. Over the holiday season I learned how to knit. It took me some time to get comfortable with it after crocheting for years, but it is definitely fun to add another skill to the craft repertoire and mix it up a little bit.
26. Our new cast iron skillet. We have been meaning to purchase one for years and now that we have it we absolutely love it.
27. This list is mainly very small things that are bringing more light into my life, but I couldn't make a love list without included my biggest loves of all, my boys. They are my heart, my everything and I can't wait to spend another year sharing this adventure.

Here's to 27!
Namaste.

The Love List
But moving on to some goodness...
We're off and crawling! The little guy is mastering his super energetic crawling moves and he is so thrilled to be able to finally get up and go. His little face just lights up as he shakily bobs forward across the floor, exploring the new terrain. Luring him with his favorite toys from point A to B has really worked out and that look of satisfaction as he reaches his train engine or Hastings, the sea turtle is one of the most precious things I have ever seen.
This milestone is exciting and terrifying. Gone now are the days of setting him down to play as I cook, fold laundry, or just go to the bathroom. But right now I am just having so much fun watching him figuring this whole mobility business out that I'll think about the rest later.
Game of Thrones - Have you guys seen this show? I know I'm a little late to the party, but I just love sitting down and enjoying a good show in mini-marathons. I'm much too impatient to wait week to week. We purchased it on blu-ray and man, it is one of the most beautifully composed shows I have ever seen. We've only seen a few episodes and so far it's mainly Game of Sexy Time or Game of Beheading, but it's well written/acted and visually stunning so I'm giving it two thumbs up.
ALSO: Avocado Banana mashup- quick, raw, and delicious this has been our go to mama and baby snack this week/ 71 degree weather/ A great date night with the hubby/ Makin' scarves/ Fresh early Spring veggies
As always I'd love to hear what's bringing you joy this week!

The Love List
The Staves. Simple, stunning harmonies. I have decided to grow my hair out, work on my pout, and join this band.
The opportunity to have a relaxed afternoon at the park with some awesome mamas. A little adult conversation while the kids play goes a long way and Ez was an unnaturally chilled out baby the entire time, just laughing and playing while us ladies chatted. Unseasonably warm weather, a calm babe, and good conversation made for a great little outing.

A beautiful baby shower for a beautiful woman. I had such a lovely time celebrating an exciting new life with my favorite people! Great company, great food, great time.

ALSO Grapefruit. How did I forget how good this stuff is?/ A visit from my mama/ Ezra's hilarious precrawling dance moves/ Looking forward to a date night this weekend/ Finding a perfect filterless humidifier for Ez's room. He is an owl and we have lovingly named him "Owlfred"/ Homemade coffee with almond milk and stevia every morning/ Getting back into my crochet groove.
As always I'd love to hear what's bringing you joy this week!

The Love List
Misfits. This is pretty much all the husband and I have been watching for the last several weeks. Quick British wit + superpowers is about a perfect combination.
Standard Fare. Out of Sight, Out of Town is on a constant loop in our car right now. Catchy and sincere, this album is downright adorable.
A great (double) date night with friends this past weekend! With great food and wonderful company we had quite a lovely evening. Although we all forgot it was Mardi Gras and downtown was a little crazy, we found a calm spot and enjoyed ourselves. Any place that will let me order a meal of sides is a big hit in my book! Hmmm...sides.
Getting into a groove of daily walks with the family. We are so lucky to live in a building with an indoor track that I feel obligated for us to take advantage of it as much as possible. When the weather is less than stellar we are still able to get out and enjoy a peaceful walk together, giving Kellen and I a good opportunity to talk (with a calm baby) and get some exercise in the process.
As always I'd love to hear what's bringing you joy this week!

The Love List
I haven't been around the internets much these last several days as the hubby has been sick and I've been working full time as a nurse and mama. Kellen is now feeling much better and fortunately it seems that both Ezra and I have been spared (yay!) so life is beginning to get back to our non-sicky normal. Thank Bejezus because I don't think I'm prepared to see my little guy sick.
So my love list is short and simple this week.

This. Always this.
As always I'd love to hear what's bringing you joy this week!

The Love List
On rotation this week is Ani Difranco's Which Side Are You On? I love the return of those riled up, politically charged tracks, but what I've been enjoying most about this album is its love songs. "I just don’t want to strive for nothing anymore/ I just want to lie here with you/ Keep the wolves outside the door/ There is nothing in this world you could ever show me that could ever matter more…"
Los Campesinos "By Your Hand" is my new 'on the way to work' sing-along. It's perfectly engineered to belt out at the top of your lungs and lasts pretty much the exact amount of time it takes me to get to the museum. Also, the video is total hipster porn. You're gonna love it. Trust me. "You'll sing me lullabies in form of your cat calls..."
Love is like a Great Dane puppy. Although I'm not sure what it says about me, I completely identify with this.
Stunning. These photos make me miss that feeling of being round and full of life. Seriously, beautiful.
Arrested Downton. Two of my favorite things together at last.
"Hearse"
"Albacore"

And because, like me, you can't get enough of Downton Abbey.
This week has already been such a gift in our house. We are all sleeping well (WOO-HOO!), the puppy is groomed (no more smelly Ellie), we've gone antique shopping with Ez (with so much to look at- he loved it!) and made some more really amazing finds for our new place.
And those are the top LOVES around these parts. What's bringing you joy this week?

The Love List
Spy. Loveable loser and struggling father, Tim, accidentally gets a job at MI5. Hilarity ensues. Darren Boyd comic timing is enviable and really makes the show. Plus there's a kid that's impossibly smart and a total dick about it which is one of my favorite tv tropes. Series One available on Hulu Plus (Series Two coming next Fall).
Finding a slim fitted prepregnancy sweater (that I could've sworn I'd lost) and it actually fitting well! Woo-hoo!
Continuing to settle in to our new place in lots of little fun ways. Hanging prints, finding adorable magnets, and a new, lovely rug (b-day gift from my pops) are all warming up the space. After months of procrastinating and general blaming it on the baby we are finally "settling in" aka getting off our bums. It's the little things that make a place feel like home, you know?

Lana Del Rey- Video Games. This song has been stuck in my head for months, but I think it's only getting better with time. With our unseasonable warm weather I just want to drive around with the windows down singing this song at the top of my lungs. "He holds me in his big arms/ Drunk and I am seeing stars/ This is all I think of..."
First Aid Kit- Our Own Pretty Ways. Everything about this song makes me happy. "Even the most peaceful town once was a battleground/ Well we all change in our own ways/ In our own pretty ways..."
Having the energy and drive to devote to my yoga practice and working out. It's still slow going, but I am just thrilled to finally have the time and desire back! I actually ran an entire mile this weekend. What? I don't think I have actually ran an entire mile since I was officially required to in order to pass Freshman P.E. and even then I probably walked part of it. So for not being a runner in the slightest it felt very, very good (you know after feeling very, very bad for a minute).
Tempesto! Yum! I can't wait to try this.
Ezra's new precrawling attempts. He is now able to pull himself up onto all fours and move his hips like a fly girl humping the ground. It's hilarious and awesome and I seriously need to start baby-proofing.

The Love List
Every. Single. Word.
"They try because during the climb, if they allow themselves to pause and lift their eyes and minds from the pain and drudgery, the views are breathtaking. They try because even though it hurts and it's hard, there are moments that make it worth the hard. These moments are so intense and unique that many people who reach the top start planning, almost immediately, to climb again. Even though any climber will tell you that most of the climb is treacherous, exhausting, killer. That they literally cried most of the way up."
Outnumbered. We've been loving this little British series this week. Series One available on Hulu Plus.
Enjoying a great day at the park with my family. The hub, the bub, the pup and myself had such a great time! Who'd have thought we'd be able to watch our buddies play touch football in the middle of January?

Gillian Welch's The Way It Will Be. All week I keep catching myself singing this tune around the house. Seriously catchy. "The way you made it, that's the way it will be..."
